Deepak Chopra


Deepak Chopra merupakan pria kelahiran India yang menjadi seorang dokter, pembicara, dan penulis di Amerika Serikat. Nama Chopra semakin populer setelah dirinya menjadi guru spiritual bagi para selebritis disana. Chopra lahir di New Delhi, India pada tanggal 22 October 1946. Ayahnya, Krishan Chopra berprofesi sebagai dokter sepesialis bedah jantung yang terkenal di India. Anggota keluarga Chopra kebanyakan memang bekerja sebagai seorang dokter, diawali dari kakek Chopra yang menjadi sersan sekaligus dokter di Angkatan Darat Inggris.
Chopra menyelesaikan pendidikan dasarnya di Saint Columba’s School, New Delhi yang kemudian dia lanjutkan di All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Pada tahun 1968, Chopra memutuskan untuk berimigrasi ke Amerika Serikat. Setiba disana, Chopra langsung mengikuti kursus medis yang diadakan oleh Muhlenberg Hospital di Plainfield, New Jersey. Pada tahun 1973, Chopra memperoleh lisensi medisnya dari Massachusetts dan pada tahun 2004 dia memperoleh lisensi medis dari California. Dia kemudian membuka praktek medis dengan spesialisasi endrokinologi.
Bersamaan dengan Chopra berpraktek, dia juga diminta mengajar ilmu media di Tufts University, Boston University dan Harvard University. Chopra juga pernah ditunjuk untuk menjadi Kepala Staf di New England Memorial Hospital yang berlokasi di Stoneham, Massachusetts. Pada tahun 1985, dia mendirikan American Association of Ayurvedic Medicine, sebuah klinik yang membantu pasien menangani permasalahan stres dan penyalahgunaan obat-obatan.
Tidak hanya berkecimpung di dunia medis, Deepak Chopra juga telah menulis lebih dari 57 buku, baik dalam kategori fiksi maupun nonfiksi. Sebagian dari karya-karyanya telah diterjemahkan ke dalam 35 bahasa dan terjual lebih dari 20 juta kopi di seluruh dunia dan beberapa di antara bukunya masuk di dalam daftar buku laris versi New York Times.
