Thomas Alva Edison

Thomas Alva Edison lahir di Milan, Ohio, pada 11 Februari 1847. Semasa hidupnya, ia dikenal sebagai seorang pengusaha sukses dan juga penemu berbagai benda penting dalam sejarah umat manusia. Ia juga merupakan orang pertama yang menerapkan prinsip produksi massal pada proses penemuannya.

Thomas kecil diajak pindah keluarganya ke Port Huron, Michigan. Bukannya menjadi anak yang berprestasi, Thomas Alva Edison malah dikeluarkan dari sekolahnya. Gurunya mengeluh karena ia selalu mendapat nilai yang rendah. Hingga akhirnya ibunda Thomas, Nancy Matthews Elliott (1810-1871) memutuskan untuk mengajar sendiri anaknya. Kebetulan, Nancy juga seorang guru.

Lepas dari sekolah umum membuat Thomas kecil lebih banyak berkreasi. Ia suka membedah hewan karena rasa ingin tahunya yang sangat besar. Di usia 11 tahun saja Thomas sudah membangun laboratorium kimia sederhana di ruang bawah tanah. Setahun kemudian ia berhasil membuat telegraf dengan model primitif.

Percobaan demi percobaan dilakoninya dengan usaha keras dan kesabaran tinggi. Tak sedikit juga butuh biaya yang cukup besar – setidaknya untuk ukuran anak remaja pada masa itu. Namun semua itu bukan penghalang. Thomas lantas bekerja sebagai loper koran dan permen di atas kereta api jurusan kota Port Huron dan Detroit. Ia juga membangun sebuah laboratorium kecil di salah satu gerbong kereta api agar bisa terus melakukan berbagai eksperimen atau hanya sekedar membaca literatur. Tentu saja ia melakukannya atas ijin pihak perusahaan kereta api, Grand Trunk Railway.

Pada tahun 1861, pecahlah perang saudara antar negara bagian utara dan selatan. Thomas lalu memiliki ide untuk menerbitkan koran pertama di atas kereta api yang berguna untuk memenuhi kebutuhan orang akan informasi. Ia membeli sebuah alat cetak tua seharga US$12, dan membuat koran sendiri bernama Weekly Herald. Korannya laku, ia pun mengantongi US$400 dalam sehari.

Tujuh tahun berlalu, Thomas Alva Edison yang hampir tuli akibat kecelakaan mendapat pekerjaan sebagai operator telegraf di Boston. Sebagian waktunya masih dihabiskan untuk melakukan berbagai penelitian. Tahun 1868, ia menemukan sistem interkom elektrik yang kemudian didaftarkan untuk mendapat hak paten pertamanya. Sayang, alat itu tidak laku dijual.

Dari sini Thomas pun belajar untuk membuat penemuan komersial. Ia mengembangkan stock ticker dan menghasilkan US$40.000. Uang ini lalu digunakan untuk membangun perusahaan dan laboratorium di Menlo Park, New Jersey. Di sinilah sumber berbagai penemuan Thomas dilahirkan, termasuk phonograph di tahun 1877.

Melihat perkembangan dunia yang semakin maju, Thomas sadar akan pentingnya lampu pijar untuk kebutuhan manusia. Ia pun rela mengeluarkan uang sebesar US$40.000 untuk membuat percobaan lampu pijar selama dua tahun. Total ada sekitar 6000 bahan yang dihabiskan, sebelum akhirnya menemukan lampu pijar listri pertama yang mampu menyala 40 jam pada 21 Oktober 1879. Bukan cuma itu, Thomas juga menemukan proyektor untuk film-film kecil. Tahun 1882, untuk pertama kalinya Thomas memasang lampu listrik di jalan dan rumah-rumah sejauh satu kilometer di New York. Dunia menjadi lebih terang berkat Thomas.

Dalam kehidupan pribadinya, Thomas Alva Edison pernah dua kali menikah. Pertama pada tahun 1871 dengan seorang wanita bernama Mary Stilwell dan berakhir pada 1884, dan yang kedua bersama Mina Miller mulai 1886 hinga akhir hidupnya. Pendiri perusahaan General Electric tahun 1890 ini pun dikaruniai 6 anak yakni Marion Estelle Edison (1873-1965), Thomas Alva Edison Jr. (1876-1935), William Leslie Edison (1878-1937), Madeleine Edison (1888-1979), Charles Edison (1890-1969), dan Theodore Miller Edison (1898-1992).

Melewati tahun 1920-an, kondisi kesehatan Thomas semakin memburuk. Ia tutup usia pada 18 Oktober 1931 pada umur 84 tahun. Namanya terus dikenang sebagai penemu paling produktif di masanya. Ada 1.093 hak paten atas namanya. Ia juga dikenal sebagai orang yang berjasa di bidang pertahanan pemerintahan Amerika setelah meneliti berbagai hal seperti mendeteksi pesawat terbang, menghancurkan periskop dengan senjata mesin, mendeteksi kapal selam, menghentikan torpedo dengan jaring, menaikkan kekuatan torpedo, kapal kamuflase, dan banyak lainnya.
