Pada suatu hari yang cerah di sebuah kota, seorang pria berencana pergi ke tempat pertunjukan sirkus dengan membawa anak dan istrinya.

Niatnya sederhana, ingin memberikan hiburan kepada keluarga di hari libur sekolah.

Sebelum sampai ke tempat pertunjukan, pria tersebut harus melewati sebuah perkemahan dengan tenda yang berukuran besar berisi gajah-gajah sirkus.

Gajah-gajah dengan ukuran besar berdiri melamun dengan kondisi satu kaki yang diikat oleh rantai kecil.

Tidak ada pagar sama sekali, setiap gajah hanya diikat dengan rantai kecil di salah satu kakinya dan tidak ada yang berusaha untuk kabur, semuanya terdiam.

Sepanjang perjalanan pria tersebut terus memandangi gajah-gajah tersebut dengan mimik wajah yang kebingungan.

Mengapa?

Pria tersebut berpikir, mengapa sang gajah dengan ukuran sebesar itu tidak menggunakan seluruh kekuatan yang dia miliki untuk memutuskan rantai kecil yang mengikat salah satu kakinya kemudian lari dari perkemahan tersebut.

Namun sebaliknya setiap gajah hanya berdiri terdiam tidak melakukan apapun.

Dengan wajah yang masih kebingungan pria tersebut menghampiri sang pawang yang daritadi juga berdiri disekitar perkemahan gajah tersebut.

Pria tersebut bertanya, mengapa para gajah itu hanya terdiam dan tidak ada satupun yang berusaha untuk kabur padahal hanya diikat dengan rantai kecil disalah satu kakinya?

Sang pawang pun tersenyum kemudian menjawab:

Ketika mereka masih sangat muda dan berukuran jauh lebih kecil dari sekarang kami menggunakan rantai dengan ukuran yang sama untuk mengikat mereka, dan pada usia itu, cukup untuk menahan mereka.

Seiring mereka tumbuh dewasa mereka dikondisikan untuk percaya bahwa mereka tidak dapat melepaskan diri.

Karenanya sampai sekarang mereka masih percaya bahwa rantainya masih bisa menahan mereka, sehingga mereka tidak pernah mencoba membebaskan diri.
